World Suicide Prevention Day 2026
World Suicide Prevention Day is a chance to talk more openly about suicide, challenge stigma and remind people that support is available. This year’s theme is Changing the Narrative on Suicide, with a simple call to action:
Start the Conversation
At PIPS Suicide Prevention Charity, we believe that talking can make a difference. You do not need to have the perfect words. You just need to be willing to ask, listen and be there.
Changing the Narrative on Suicide
Suicide can still be difficult to talk about.
Changing the narrative means making it easier to have honest conversations, listen without judgement and help people feel able to ask for support.
It means moving away from silence and stigma, and towards understanding, compassion and connection.
This World Suicide Prevention Day, PIPS Suicide Prevention Charity is encouraging people across our communities, workplaces and families to help make those conversations easier.
Start the conversation.
How to Start the Conversation
If you are worried about someone, checking in can be a good place to start.
You could say:
“How are you, really?”
“You haven’t seemed yourself lately. Do you want to talk?”
“I’ve been thinking about you. Is everything okay?”
If you are concerned that someone may be thinking about suicide, it is okay to ask directly:
“Are you thinking about suicide?”
Being open and direct can give someone the space to speak honestly about how they are feeling.
If Someone Opens Up
You do not need to have all the answers.
What matters is that you listen, take them seriously and help them find the right support.
- Give them your full attention
- Listen without judgement
- Avoid rushing to fix the situation
- Let them know you are glad they told you
- Encourage them to get support
- Check in again afterwards
Sometimes the most important thing you can do is stay in the conversation.

I’m Worried About Someone.
If you are worried about someone, trust that concern and check in with them. Ask how they are feeling. Give them time to answer. Listen without judgement.
If you are concerned they may be thinking about suicide, it is okay to ask directly:
“Are you thinking about suicide?”
If they tell you they are struggling, take them seriously and help them connect with support. You do not have to handle the situation alone.

Too many lives are being lost. Too many families left grieving.
Our new campaign calls for urgent action – because when mental health support is weakened, our communities pay the price.
